Wearable Sculpture Series
One-of-a-Kind Fine Craft Jewelry
Story
A new series of one of a kind jewelry designed to make a bold statement. The series
“Wearable Sculpture” is unique in the fine craft jewelry genera. As one would expect there
is a one-of-a-kind piece of statement jewelry, what is new and exciting is that the piece also
is designed with a sculptural custom display as part of the artwork. The jewelry and display
are designed in tandem to enhance one another.
The jewelry and display are focused on highlighting, quite literally, the striking allure and
beauty of stones that have some degree of translucency or some stunning pattern. The
design and display stand allow the stones to glow with the luscious color nature bestowed
on these amazing objects. Some stones are near transparent like the pale blue of a topaz
in Sea Anemone, or the deep rich crimson color of a garnet such as is in Cliff Strata. Other
stones are less transparent but still emit an alluring glow of natural color as light passes
through them like the aqua radiance of a Peruvian opal or perhaps the mesmerizing
intricate pattern of lace agate. I collect center stones around which I build a design. These
stones, well, in a way call to me to transform them to a new beginning. I’ve spent hours
culling through thousands of rough stones in search of those that are ready for
transformation into a one-of-a-kind sculptural jewelry piece. Typically I cut and polish these
stones to my unique vision.
The Wearable Sculpture series is complex in that all the centerpiece stones are one-of-a-
kind, often cut and polished in a way not typically found. I design a piece of jewelry around
the stone in order to highlight how light enlivens a translucent stone, or how it plays across
the surface. For translucent stones these pieces are designed with a stand to display them
so that the light can work its magic. Set on a window seal or before a lamp these pieces
come alive. The jewelry and the stand combine to form a small sculpture to be seen and
enjoyed daily, not hidden away in a jewelry box. Wearable sculpture or sculptural jewelry,
either way the result is a truly unique statement to display in your home or on your
person.
Jewelry has for the breadth of human history been an outward expression of inner being.
I’ve always considered jewelry miniature sculpture, a delightful object that can be
examined in the hand or adorn a body. I call this series Wearable Sculpture, with emphasis
on wearable. This idea came about from a desire to have my pieces on display rather than
hidden in a box. I create a piece of wearable statement jewelry and a meaningful and
complementary display for the piece. The piece is a miniature sculpture within a small
sculpture.
The large stones that are at the center of the design are selected because they evoked a
palpable recollection in me, like water I’ve swum in, a cliff face I’ve gazed at, or a science
lesson that captured my imagination. They are the inspiration for the story of the piece. I
will leave the stone as natural as I can while enhancing the innate beauty by selective
polishing. The rawness of edges or the natural cavity in a stone is compelling to me.
I build a mounting for the stone that furthers the story. Acquiring the final form is
something of a working meditation to me, very contemplative, and fully engaging. I love
the focus required for hours, the intensity is mesmerizing. The metalworking technique
may be lost wax casting, cuttlebone casting, or directly in the metal through a fabrication
process.
This Wearable Sculpture Series is on display or can be worn so that the piece is always
telling its story. My hope is that others find in the designs something that can help them
express themselves. As an artist I am inspired by so many things around me. Sometimes it
is a beautiful stone around which I feel compelled to design a piece. Other times it is a
topic or a texture. These are one-of-a-kind pieces designed and hand crafted to reflect a
unique perspective. They might be pendants, bracelets, or any of the myriad of other
articles of jewelry. These items will be available for purchase as they are finished. Please
