Story
An art piece from the “Wearable Sculpture” series by artist Kelly M Noonan
Built around an inspiring central slab of agate. The stone has inspired two pieces, this and
its sister piece, “Inner Space”. The transition of this stone from opaque rust colored jasper
at one end reminded me of the deep recesses of space. The stone transitions into a
creamy translucency inclusive of brown pluming very reminiscent of the billion star brown
billowy nebula as seen by the Hubble Space Telescopes. The white quartz crystals
reminded me of twinkling stars.
A rainbow moonstone is set stone-in-stone in the agate. Outer Space is constructed of an
Argentium sterling silver frame of tubes with garnet ends encircled by an orbit of wire
holding planets of moonstone, garnet, and a New Compo meteorite.
The stand is a glass disk of 11 inches with a shallow concave slump of 1 inch deep.
Inspiration for the glass design were the images of deep space captured by the Hubble
Telescope. The plate is constructed with three layers of glass the back most a rich cobalt
blue topped with two layers of clear. Depth is created by abstract patterns of gold, copper,
silver, and brass colored mica painted onto the layers of glass and fired into the piece.
Look closely and you’ll see some pinhead sized fine silver planetary balls, wisps of black frit
nebula, and some bits of iridescent dichroic glass. The stand for the glass plate is hand
formed from 20 feet of heavy copper wire. Bring outer space into your inner space with
this beautiful piece of wearable sculpture.
Neckless is 6 inches wide by 2.5 inch high, it hangs 28 inches in total length
On base 16 inches wide by 11 inches high by 6.5 inches deep
