Story
Cast pieces made by using cuttlebone are naturally one-of-a-kind. The pattern imparted to the metal is different every time like a fingerprint. I cast into a cuttlebone by cutting a cavity or pattern into the material then cast molten metal into the cavity. The cuttlebone is burned beyond reuse in the process. Cuttlebone is the internal shell of a cuttlefish, a cephalopod, related to squids and octopi. Yes it is the same bone as seen in bird cages. There is an annual die off after egg laying on inshore reefs. The bones of the diseased fish are often washed up on beaches by the thousands. This series consists of several types of jewelry like pendants, cufflinks, and bracelets. The shapes are the same but the pattern is always unique.
